INVASION - DESTROYER OF MANKIND (OLD SCHOOL DM/BRUTAL DM, 2017)

Invasion - Destroyer of Mankind (2017, old school dm, brutal dm)

I've been itching to write a full review on Invasion's Destroyer of Mankind for some time. I waited until I received a physical copy of the album, so I could give Destroyer of Mankind the justice it deserves.

If you are prone to bowel eruptions, then I suggest relocating to the toilet in preparation for an artillery run. Destroyer of Mankind induces that kind of body experience. When you first hear the album, I can promise you will react with an outburst of 'whoa'. What struck me when listening to the music was the sheer level of work invested in creating Destroyer of Mankind. This isn't an album that has been done by Big Dave one Saturday morning whilst watching 101 ways to eat a tuna sandwich. Invasion took their time with Destroyer of Mankind, and boy does it show.

  Concept

Destroyer of Mankind is a concept album that explores Pete's (lead vocalist) interest in WW2. As a nerd I immediately gravitated towards the idea, as I also try to do the same with my radio shows, although different themes. Holding the booklet in my hands added something special to the experience of listening to Destroyer of Mankind. I felt like the guys had recruited me into their specialised unit of mosh. Whilst I was listening and reading the lyrics, it played out like a dark theater play detailing the terrors and nightmares of WW2. It's quite a smart approach the guys used to bring this to life for the listener through means of first person narration, which created the mood, atmosphere, and environment for the music. Imagine a dark spirit writing poetry about the events of WW2, accompanied with a relentless, brutal fury unleashed as the soundtrack.

There is a mix of other narrative tones such as 2nd and 3rd person, but they are interwoven together to create a mosh work of art. Concept albums succeed if they are able to make the audience feel like they are listening to a musical book or movie. Destroyer of Mankind succeeds in pulling this off.

Music

Ok, so I've nerded on and on about the concept, but what about the music? Invasion play old school death metal, but laced with a brutal style combining thrashy speeds to ensure the intensity is maintained from start to finish. Imagine a legion of mosh tanks roaring across the earth, spewing forth the sound of Invasion as they pummel all who dare to defy the mosh. Images such as these are formed when you listen to Invasion. The tracks enable the listeners to recruit mosh legions and mosh pits. Strong vocals, meaty riffs, consistent speed, altogether flowing tightly with the drums.

Conclusion

I'm a nerd, and any excuse for me to mention nerd stuff is always pounced on. Would you all like to know why Destroyer of Mankind receives the prestigious mosh nerd award? Conan the Barbarian reference and quote! When I read the lyrics for 'I am the enemy', I experienced a nerd spasm, because I noticed the following; "To crush my enemies and see them driven before; - words echoed by the great king from distant lore". I thought 'yes', 'yes'. You know it is legit when Conan is sourced. Oooof!

Invasion created a mosh tank monster that is solid from the beginning to the end. I want to stress the worth ethic the guys embody. Referring to my original promo post for the band 'An extremely high standard of death metal music'. Invasion's mosh tank 'Destroyer of Mankind' has been unleashed!

And remember, Conan is referenced, that should sell it for you! Conan mosh!

Respect guys!
