1.Hello how are things going in Poland these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hi! How are things giong in Poland? Well, in terms of politics it's very stormy right now. I think it's one of the most difficult periods in our history. Current situation in our country is one of the topics of our new album.
2.When did you first meet the other members of the band? And how did you all choose Rotengeist does it have a special meaning? And who would you say are some of the bands biggest influences?
Our band exsists since 2005. Until April 2015 we used to have the same line-up. I'm a guitarist and vocalist, Ziemek Gawlik does drums and Alek Partynski bass. We were friends long before we created Rotengeist. Every one of us had some previous musical experience. To cut the long story short, in 2005 I've decided to come back to playing music and I offered Ziemek and Alek to join. As far as our tastes for music are concerned, each one of us had a different one. Ziemek used to be (and still is) the most “old school”, I loved American thrash, especially Megadeth. (I'm a bit different now, taking a turn towards alternative and electronic). Alek listened to Tool and grunge bands.
3.What is the current line up of the band? And how do you feel Rotengeist's music has changed over the years?
In April 2015 Alek left the band. We mutually agreed that we can't continue to cooperate any longer. We begun to write a follow-up to “Start to Exterminate” and we realized that differences in views between Alek and the rest of the band are too huge. His boots were filled by Adam Drys (after we tried some other candidates). Adam finished a school of music and he's got some solid experience, playing in Underdark and Cryptic Tales (a band originally from 90's which had major influence in Polish undergound of that era). He knows a thing or two about music and he is a real bag of ideas. :) He definitely had his share in development of the band and the way our new album sounds.
4.The Test That Divides Us All is the bands third full-length release how long did it take the band to write the music for the new release?Does the whole band work on the music or does one member write everything?
It took us nearly a year to write all songs. Adam brought two songs and we wrote the rest together. We arrange songs together.
5.Who usually takes care of writing the lyrics for the band and what are some topics you all wrote about on the new release?
Until now I used to write lyrics and arrange vocals. When we worked on our last album it was different. Adam helped me a lot, because he wrote lyrics and arranged vocals for 4 songs. It turned out great. When I used to arrange vocals I mostly thought how to sing while playing guitar. Adam didn't have to think about it so I guess we made a step forwards. i'm far from thinking of myself as a great singer, but I believe vocals on “The test that divides us all” are the best in Rotengeist's history.
6.Besides the new release The Test That Divides Us All are any of the previous releases still available for purchase? Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise available for thereaders if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
Except from “Promo 2007” all our releases are available. You can buy it directly from us or via our label Defense Records.
7.Does Rotengeist play live very often? What have been your most memorable shows over the years?
So far we played 200 shows. When you look at our history one can say it's not a lot, but keep in mind that we're all busy guys and we're involved in many projects not related to music.
If I was to point a single memorable show I'd say a recent one together with Christ Agony in Polish town Krosno. Great crowd. That was the second one where we performed new songs. Crowed reacted really well so we're on the right tracks (or should I write “wrong” tracks) :)
8.Are their any tours or shows planned in support of the new release? If yes where will the band be playing and who are some bands you will be sharing the stage with?
Yes. We've planned 8 concerts, which are going to happen in October in Poland. We're going to be supported by MoshMachine (I play guitar in that band). After that we'd like to go abroad, but there're no specifics yet.
9.Do any of the members of Rotengeist work with any other bands or projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
Like I mentioned earlier I play in MoshMachine. It's a groove metal band based in Krosno (home town of Decapitated). Other members have vast experience but right now they play in Rotengeist.
10. Rotengeist comes out of the Polish thrash metal scene what is your opinion of the thrash scene in Poland?
Lately there have been some excellent thrash metal bands in Poland such as Virgin Snatch, Tester Gier, Terrordome. Although there are numerous bands who IMHO play very solid music, thrash metal is underrated in Poland as well as abroad.
11.Who are your all-time favorite Polish bands and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
I admire Behemoth for what they do and how they do it. I'm not 100% into their music but the way they “take care of business” deserves a round of applause. Next in line is Vogg and his Decapitated. I'm paying more attention to drummers, despite being a guitar guy, but Wacek is a master in his trade. Precision and tightness of his right hand blows my mind.
That would be all I can think of. Obviously there are plenty of good bands out there but I've been more into alternative these days.
12.Besides bands are their any honest, reliable labels or distro's you feel the readers should check out soon?
Check out Defense Records' distro.
13.We here at Ancient Visionz web-zine are huge movie fans do you watch a lot of movies? What are some of your all-time favorite movies?
Yes I love movies. I watch as many as my schedule permits. Woody Allen is a guy I can watch over and over. On top of my list is also Melancholia by von Trier and Das Leben der Anderen by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. I'm not a big fan of SF but I love Star Wars since I was a kid. Our Polish cinema is getting better and better. Ida, Jestem Mordercą, Zaćma. I highly recommend.
14.Who are some of your favorite directors? And favorite actors and actresses?
Like I mentioned above Woody Allen. Some time ago Tarantino and Almodovar.
15.Besides metal music do you listen to any other underground musicial genres?
Yes, more often electronic music and Polish alternative. The last album of a Polish female singer Brodka is great. I can recommend that one.
16.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?
Thank you for the opportunity. Best wishes to your readers and thank you for taking up with Rotengeist.
